Hertfordshire is a county bordering onto London to the south and Bedfordshire to the north. The main towns are Watford, Stevenage, Hatfield, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead. St Albans is named after Saint Alban the first British Christian martyr, a Roman soldier executed in place a priest in the 3rd or 4th century during the Roman occupation. The town has had a notable Cathedral on the site dating back to 1077, the current one dates back to the 19th century!
Stevenage was one of the first new towns developed after the war, it now has a population of over 85,000. Herts also has two ‘Garden Cities’ Welwyn Garden City and Letchworth Garden City which were designed to include significant green belts as a measure against over population in commuter areas around London.
